As Cicero put it, "A room without books is like a body without a soul." So it's great to see that the University of Aberdeen has decided that there is no better way of marking its sixth century than by the establishment of a new library. Not, as many others have done, the establishment of a "learning resource centre", but a "library", with books, manuscripts and other texts. Indeed, one that is open also to the public, reinforcing and extending the fine Scottish tradition of the "democratic intellect."
